You don't need a big budget to be able to afford a new family car. For less than $30,000 you can get behind the wheel of a top-quality vehicle packed with all the latest features.

We look at five family favourites, all of which come with ANCAP’s five-star gold standard safety rating.

Toyota Corolla

The car that sold more than all others in Australia 2014 must have a lot going for it. Buyers choose Toyotas for their legendary reliability, high build quality and resale value. The Corolla is also roomy inside, with one of the biggest boots in its class.

Some critics say the Corolla's 1.8 litre engine lacks the oomph of its more powerful rivals, but that hasn’t discouraged buyers.

Mazda3

The Mazda3 was Australia’s second-favourite car last year, finishing behind the Corolla - but only just. It’s very popular too, and for good reason.

The third generation Mazda3 looks great from the outside, and its interior has a really classy feel compared to other similarly priced cars. Its ANCAP safety score of 36.4 out of 37 is the highest of any vehicle in its class.

Hyundai i30

Korean cars have come far in terms of styling and finish, and the Hyundai i30 is a good example. Hyundai is the fastest-growing car brand in the world, and the i30 was Australia's fourth best-selling vehicle for 2014.

Apart from some changes to its appearance, it hasn't been updated for a few years now. But it still rates highly in Aussie hearts.

VW Golf

The multi-award-winning Golf has a reputation for the quality we expect from German engineering. The Volkswagen Golf boasts one of the quietest, smoothest rides in its class thanks to its top-of-the-line noise and vibration softening technology.

The Golf also comes with unique safety features, such as Volkswagen's driver fatigue system. This monitors the driver's behaviour and will sound an alert and recommend taking a break if it senses the driver is drowsy.

Ford Focus

Ford has a long and proud history in Australia, and the Ford Focus is their top seller. In 2012, it was the biggest-selling car in the world.

The Focus hasn't been redesigned for a while, but it's had a few freshen-ups that have kept it on the list of the top 10 best-selling cars in Australia. Die-hard fans insist it's the sportiest-looking car in its class, and that its excellent road handling makes it the most fun to drive in this price range.

No matter what make or model you choose, there’s something really special about owning a new car. It’s also a big investment and one worth protecting.
